Ma'ju'un is located in the New Republic's territory, but right at the border to the Unknown Regions, from where the First Order started its rise to power.
The planet was a cultural epicenter for many centuries, until the indiginous species found Spice on their planet. The drug was mined here for a very long time and the more power local mobs and other criminal organisations gained, the more arts and culture were driven off-world. Slowly but surely the mobs transformed their planet's blooming economy into nothing and when the Spice finally ran out, every sentient life form went away from Ma'ju'un. The planet has been uninhabited for 300 years.
An ice age is slowly but surely starting and the drop in temperature is causing planetwide thunderstorms on a regular basis.
